You must say

Today Pop-pop came to visit Elisabeth (and to bring her a bicycle that he refurbished after her previous one was stolen). While they were sitting together on the couch reading a book, he asked Elisabeth, "Can I have a hug?" Elisabeth replied,

"You must say: 'May I please have a hug . . . in Spanish!'"
