Seeds of Purpose

I am always in the market for music that helps children (and their parents) to memorize Scripture. In that quest, several friends recommended Seeds, a line of children's music that is Scripture set to music, and is intentionally designed for family worship. We received Seeds of Purpose, one of their four CDs, and I have been impressed.

I'm happy to say that I find myself now singing Scripture. If I had to rate the musical quality on a scale from 1 to 10, it would probably get a 5 or 6, but that's probably because I'm a snob. Elisabeth really enjoys it, and I'm enjoying it more and more. More importantly, I think that it is going to become music that we can use for family worship - not just to listen to, but to worship together.

No Fun with Numbers

Some time ago, Elisabeth was given Fun with Numbers, a musical CD designed to help kids with number concepts and simultaneously drive parents out of their minds.

Elisabeth has quickly caught onto our dislike for the CD (since it frequently disappears) and recently announced to a house guest,

"This music really annoys my parents!"

She's right.

Sleep Sound in Jesus

I have long been a fan of Michael Card, even when I was younger and it wasn't "cool" to like a guy who is balding and aging. When I was in college, he came once to our chapel service. I expected him to play a set of music from his recently recorded works. He did play a few songs, but most of the time he spent opening a passage of Romans to us. It was very clear both in his music and his message that he was one who had been mastered by the Gospel.

Recently some friends offered to lend us Sleep Sound in Jesus, and I was delighted to find the same depth of lyrics for infants as for adults. I enjoy listening to it play while Elisabeth drops off to sleep (which I cannot say for all of her music).

Hide 'Em in Your Heart

Elisabeth was just given Volume 2 of Hide 'em in Your Heart. What a great way to memorize Scripture! Like the first volume, the songs are Scripture set to music. However, in addition to the audio CD, this package includes a DVD of the kids' songs.

I think the musical quality of the first volume was slightly better, but the content of this CD is also excellent.

Philadelphia Chickens

Sandra Boynton outdoes herself with this "imaginary musical revue." I think it is probably funnier for parents than children, but Elisabeth seems to love it.

Beware that the genre of music is much more akin to Broadway than children's tunes. (The music makes me smile just as much as the silly lyrics.)

My two favorites are Snoozers and I like to Fuss.

Great children's music

Right now I am listening to Hide 'em in your heart, a CD of children's tunes from Steve Green. Essentially it is Scripture set to music. I like both that the music is good (I don't mind getting the tunes stuck in my head . . . which I can't say for lots of children's music) and the Scriptures selected are a great representation of what a child learn first about God's salvation in Christ.

I think this is a great example of solid content with great aesthetic quality.
