Seeking book recommendations
Recently we had someone very generously give us a check "to be used only for books." So I am looking for recommendations on the best Christian children's literature, particularly works that expand a child's worldview (e.g. Windows on the World) or that are great literature (e.g. Tales of the Restoration). So what do you recommend?

This is not a Christian book; it's a collection of folk tales from around the world that feature women in the lead roles, rather than as the damsels in distress. I love it; it may be too advanced for Elisabeth right now but is worth looking at for a permanent collection. I got it before she was born since I adore mythology and folk tales from many different countries and wanted to have a "balanced" view to offer her.

Am I allowed to suggest books even though I don't have kids? :) We have a stash of kids books and one of my favorites is the Big Picture Story Bible. A friend who used to work at Crossway gave it to me, and it's much better than other children's Bibles that I've read in the past - Roger is even impressed with it! The Read Aloud Bible Stories series is also really fantastic. We have several of them that you can look through when you're here next if you like.
In the expand-your-worldview category, maybe something like A Life Like Mine, How People Live, or Children Just Like Me. They're not Christian books, but I think they would provide great discussion starters that you could take advantage of. There are lots of books out there that focus on cultural differences in food, houses, transportation, etc, which might be interesting to a child as young as Elisabeth - Let's Eat is a good one. When I looked it up on Amazon I found links to Wake Up World and the Around the World series, which looked interesting as well. These might be ones that you'd want to preview at a library or bookstore before purchasing, to make sure you're comfortable with the language and viewpoint, but hopefully they're at least a good starting point for your book research!
I think I've just revealed my weakness for good children's literature... Sorry for the very long comment!

Thanks for the suggestions, Haley. (You're certainly not disqualified from contributions!) I will check them out at the local Barnes & Noble before we purchase.
